Since independence from the British Empire in 1948, Eelam Thamils have been persecuted by the Sinhalese majority.  As a result, almost a million Thamils from Eelam territory have sought political asylum in over forty countries within the past twenty years.  The strife has claimed the lives of over seventy thousand civilians besides the losses sustained by the combatants.  The Eelam Thamil Diaspora, despite adopting very well in their host countries, has been helping out with the rehabilitation of their relatives who have been displaced by the unprovoked aerial bombardments and capture of Thamil territory by the Sri Lankan Government.  The active participation of the Diaspora in supporting the rehabilitation of displaced Thamils in Sri Lanka is a good example of showing concern for their birthplace.

A recent report in the media by the Sinhalese of Sri Lanka stated that Eelam Thamils in the
Diaspora have forgotten the plight of the Thamils back home in Thamil Eelam.  The report further went onto shed more crocodile tears by saying that these Diaspora Thamils will never go back to Sri Lanka because they are used to a higher standard of living in the countries they have sought refuge.  The report came to the conclusion those expatriate Thamils will not return home even though the Liberation Tigers gained their Independent State.  This is wishful thinking on the part of the Sri Lankan Government and it is part of a diabolic plan to isolate the Thamils in Eelam territory and subjugate them.  The Sri Lankan State had, as usual, miscalculated the yearnings of the Diaspora Thamils.  One only has to attend the Heroes Day functions to see the patriotism and sense of gratitude expressed by thousands of men, women and children from the Diaspora Thamils living in the major cities in the west.

Contrary to the report, there are many Eelam Thamils working behind the scenes to layout plans for the development of Eelam once peace is achieved.  A free Eelam will adhere to the free market economic model, which will certainly attract a lot of investment from overseas.  If the Sri Lankan Government is so concerned about the future development of Eelam territory, it should let the Thamils decide their fate instead of making patronizing statements via reports!
