Tamil Detainees Send Appeal to Politicians to Obtain Their Release

[EelamNation, November 07/2001]

Tamil detainees from several jails in Sri Lanka including Wellikada and Kalutura have sent a plea to the Tamil politicians through their lawyers to obtain their freedom.  The politicians should raise their voice at least during the election days because we have been held in custody not only one or two years but more than five years.  The Sri Lankan Forces arrested us alleging connections with the Tamil Tigers, but we are jailed without a single case being filed, they stated. I found a sample essay, possibly better buy essays online, read more...

The detainees claimed that when the Tamil politicians came to see them in jails, they used to give their promises; however, they never made any meaningful attempts to obtain their freedom.  Late Mr. Kumar Ponnampalam made genuine attempts through his discussions with political leaders and judicial officials of the country to obtain the release of their colleagues, but after he was killed no one is there to replace him, they emphasized.

They said that they are living under pathetic conditions including food not being provided by the jailers; we cannot even sleep because there are no pillows or bed sheets and the mosquitoes thrive inside the jails.  We are the prey to the mosquitoes, which are drinking our blood, and we have been made thin by such conditions and malnourishment but it seems no one cares about our well being, they claimed.

“We have been living under severe stresses for several reasons including missing our parents, siblings, relatives and neighbors.  It is evident that several of our colleagues are psychologically ill which is evident from their behavior, habits, activities and the things they talk about”, they stated.

The detainees further said that they have been imprisoned for no reason and having been spending years in jail for no crime committed or proved in any court of law.  The Sri Lankan authorities used false statements to detain us, which they will not be able to prove in any court of law.  But the truth is that we have never been produced in any court of law nor has any case been filed in the judicial courts of the country.

We are pleading from our genuine Tamil politicians to raise their voices and they should include this demand in their election manifesto in order to draw the attention of the populace and executives of the country.  The Sri Lankan security forces have destroyed our young lives completely.  We are optimistic about our future after our liberation, and we are not willing to spend further years in jails; we also have dreams just like the others who are living outside of jails enjoying the freedom and normal life, they added.
