Negative Rhetoric Is
Doubly Disturbing, Says NPC
[EelamNation, November 10/2001]
The National Peace Council of Sri Lanka in a
statement on Friday, November 9, said the reflection of ethnic issue in
the election campaign has indicated the importance of the ethnic conflict
in the life of the country, but leading politicians are using ethnic
conflict in a most negative and emotive manner to discredit their
political opponents. We call on the political parties to present to
the people their set of core proposals to end the conflict instead of
launching emotive and provocative attacks against one another, the
statement stated. prosjektledelse
The full text of the statement is given below:
The ethnic conflict, and its associated north-east
war, is emerging as the most prominent issue of the election campaign.
This reflects the undoubted importance of the ethnic conflict in the life
of the country. However, the National Peace Council is disturbed
that leading politicians are using the ethnic conflict in a most negative
and emotive manner to discredit their political opponents. The fact
that some of these politicians are leaders of government is doubly
disturbing. Tumescent liposuction in New York as plementary re to monplace tumescent liposuction health
It was to end the war through political dialogue
that the government consented to Norwegian facilitation two years ago.
The peace process envisaged called for engagement and relationship
building between the government and LTTE. Therefore, ruling party
politicians should not try to deny the same opportunity to opposition
politicians who seek to form the government by contesting the elections.
We believe that an election campaign offers one of
the best opportunities to enlighten the people on the course of action
that a political party hopes to follow if it forms the government.
After the elections they can justifiably claim that the people gave them a
mandate to pursue the course of action that they presented in outline
during the election campaign. We call on the political parties to
present to the people their set of core proposals to end the conflict
instead of launching emotive and provocative attacks against one another.
Further, the NPC urges the political parties to
declare during their election campaigns that they will set up a mechanism
to resolve the ethnic conflict on the lines of the 17th Amendment meant to
depoliticise key institutions such as those dealing with elections, public
administration and police. The rhetoric of the election campaign
demonstrates the need for a depoliticised mechanism that will ensure that
the search for a political solution to the ethnic conflict is taken out of
the domain of partisan politics.
